Preschool vs. Child Care

I have worked in early childhood education or childcare for over 12 years. The past four years I have been teaching 4-year-old kindergarten. One question that always seems to arise is, “what is the difference between preschools and daycare/child care?”

I get the impression that most parents feel daycare is more custodial care, while preschool is preparation for kindergarten. However, children who go to daycare and children who go to preschool programs have similar needs and interests. Because of this fact, the National Association for the Education of Young Children does not distinguish between these two forms of care when considering what factors contribute to quality care. As you begin to research and explore educational possibilities for your 3- or 4-year-old, keep in mind that early childhood is all about the journey -- not the destination. Look for an environment which emphasizes activities that strengthen children's physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. As important, make sure it is an environment that you find comfortable.
