Although the three dome structures at the Mitchell Park Domes are closed indefinitely over safety concerns, a few popular events will be held in The Domes Annex.
The Music Under Glass concert series will take place in the adjacent annex, with reduced admission of $5/adults. Vivo with Warren Wiegratz is performing Thursday, Feb. 11 from 6:30-9 p.m.
The weekly Milwaukee County Winter Farmers Market also will remain open as scheduled each Saturday in the annex.
However, there are a few events that will not take place and will not be rescheduled, including:
- The Friends of the Domes Valentine's event on Feb. 14
- Turkey Under Glass on Feb. 20
- Gardens & Gears Steampunk Fair on Feb. 21
- Winter Silhouettes Bonsai Exhibit on Feb. 28
- German Under Glass on March 5.
- Family Irish Day on March 6.
The popular train show, "Attack of the Giant Monsters," also is closed.
The Mitchell Park Domes will likely remain closed for at least a few months, as protective netting is installed to protect visitors from potentially falling concrete debris from the structures’ internal frames.
The Arid Dome was closed first on Jan. 28 after fallen concrete was discovered, and officials then closed the two other structures on Friday, Feb. 5.
The aging, deteriorating structures were built in stages between 1959 and 1967 and will need significant remain and reconstruction to ensure their future. Estimated cost of replacement is about $75 million, according to the county.
In September, Milwaukee County planned to spend about $500,000 to "develop an overall repair strategy for the three aging domes," according to a Journal Sentinel report.
The county spent $200,000 in 2013 and 2014 to repair the deteriorated frame of the Tropical Dome.
