Of course libraries are a great source for books to check out and take home to read.

They're also a great place to take the kids and listen to stories. And story times at Milwaukee Public Libraries are more than just about listening to stories (although that part is great too!), there are crafts, games, songs and great themes as well.

Here's a sampling of special story times at Milwaukee Public Libraries.

Playgroup with Stories: A 20-minute story time for children and their parent or guardian is followed by open play time with a variety of age-appropriate, educational toys. For children ages 2 and under with a parent of guardian.

Preschool Story Time: Preschoolers are invited for fun stories, songs and finger plays designed to help them develop important literacy skills needed prior to learning how to read. Child care centers are welcome.

Paws and Read: Read out loud to a cuddly canine! The Alliance of Therapy Dogs will provide furry friends the first Saturday of each month. Come in to say hello, give a pet, or read a selection of good books. Great for reluctant readers!

Play and Learn: Saturday morning story times with special guests at Washington Park Library

Saturdays at Central and Saturday Afternoons at Central for Tweens: Special themed activities each week at Central Library

LEGO!: We provide the LEGOs, you provide the creativity! Join other LEGO enthusiasts and see what you can create from the bottom up!

Pajama Story Time: Families with young children are invited to have fun sharing stories, songs and rhymes designed to develop early literacy skills and encourage a love of reading. Come dressed in your coziest PJs and bring a stuffed animal friend.

Crafternoon: See what you can create with a varied selection of craft materials. Make a gift or something just for you!

There are also great seasonal story times like these:

Butterfiles! Spring has sprung! Celebrate the season and MPL’s Big Read selection “In the time of the butterflies” with a butterfly-themed story time and craft.

Chill with a Poem: Celebrate National Poetry Month! Select a poem to read from one of our many books or write your own poetry. Share the poem with the group as we enjoy a snack of popcorn.

Go Bananas! Celebrate National Banana Day with ridiculous banana antics!

Celebrate Earth Day: Want to learn how you can make a difference by protecting the Earth? Learn about composting and recycling and create crafts from things that you might otherwise just throw away.

Check out the Milwaukee Public Library website for the location of your closest library and times for these and more special story times!
